How to Identify German Roaches

Here are a few easy ways to identify German roaches compared to American cockroaches.

One of the most important parts of pest control is figuring out what type of pest you’re dealing with. For example, German cockroaches are notoriously hard to get rid of, which means our treatment plan for them is different from other types of roaches.

German Roaches

German roaches are yellow/tan colored with two dark stripes on their head. They’re smaller, around 1/2″-5/8″ on average. When inside your home, this type of roach is drawn to humid, warm areas such as the bathroom or kitchen. Any crack or dark crevice near food or water could hide these roaches.

American Cockroaches

On the other hand, American cockroaches are reddish-brown and are usually bigger than German roaches (1/2″-2″). You might see American roaches in the bathroom as well, but they’re most likely to be in your kitchens/pantries, as well as basements and larger commercial buildings.

Solutions

If you think you’re dealing with a roach infestation, do your best to sanitize your home. Wipe up any food residue, vacuum crumbs, and make sure you don’t have any leaky pipes. If you can, take a picture of one of the roaches and then contact a pest control professional.

We can treat for roaches and help you kick any unwanted visitors from your house. We usually ask customers to send a photo or describe the type of roach they’re dealing with, as our treatments are different for German roaches.
