Q: Do you know why this is a red flag?
A: Termites
Storing firewood close to the house can entice termites with their favorite food. While they’re feeding on the wood and spreading out, there’s a chance they might decide to eat wooden parts of your home. The green flag in this photo is that the firewood isn’t sitting on soil. Subterranean termites live underground and can detect wood sitting on the soil easily.
The best way to store firewood is off the ground in a rack or sitting on something and about 20 feet away from the home for a large pile of wood. No wood should be stored touching the house. Termites are a huge problem where we live due to the humidity, so we also recommend annual inspections for all homeowners to protect your most valuable investment.
